As part of a move to “smarter” phones, Virgin Mobile is planning to introduce touchscreen phones. Virgin Mobile focuses on low-end and basic models for making calls and sending messages.

CEO Dan Schulman did not give any specifics about the plan. Over the past 18 months the company has been able to acquire Helio. Since then, the operator has offered more multimedia handsets and messaging-centric devices with full keyboards.

Last year, Virgin’s subscriber base grew 6 percent to 5.4 million. Schulman said the touchscreen phones would be targeted to low and middle-income youth on prepaid plans. As for the competition (which is very strong), Sprint Nextel and other carriers have already started changing the pricing picture with “unlimited” monthly voice and data plans. Let the games begin.

  1. Dont hold your breath for Virgin Mobile to come up with something, I asked our rep regarding when we are going to get some phones and this guy (Jake Kim) just keeps saying lets see it will come one day. It’s been a month since release and he keeps spewing the same thing, either he just does know anything or does not care for the success of the company either way with the company run by these idiots I would not expect anything big.
