Remember the CDMA Treo 800w with EV-DO Rev.A, WiFi and Windows Mobile 6? It was rumored to be launching in April, and hopefully bringing with it a few new Sprint customers to the Palm stable. Unfortunately, according to Palm CEO Ed Colligan in a quarterly results conference call, the company’s new Windows Mobile range “are not coming out this quarter” but will be “before the end of the Summer”.

Frankly, if it arrives with the leaked specs we’ve seen, by then the market will have well moved on beyond the Treo 800w. Even for an April launch, the handset would’ve looked patchy compared to many of the other smartphones - Windows Mobile and otherwise - available; Palm really need to address the screen and the handset size as a whole.
To avoid the conference call sounding like an obituary, Colligan did suggest that Palm’s new Treo “will be the most competitive enterprise solution in the marketplace”; I’ve no doubt that his competitors will be looking forward to the five or so extra months they have to fettle their alternatives and challenge that claim.
