This one’s probably not that big of a shock to anyone. Considering that cell phones are already prohibited inside prisons anyway, this would seem to be the next logical step. The House of Representatives has approved S. 1749, which was actually a bill approved by the Senate back in April, and is now officially waiting for the President of the United States to sign it and make it a law. The main difference from this law to the others? It now makes it a punishable crime.
And while that’s not shocking at all, there is a bit of extra legislation happening that makes it a bit more enticing. Especially for those Sci-Fi folks out there. While apparently banning cell phones from prison and then making it a punishable offense isn’t enough, apparently actually jamming cell phone signals is. That’s right, State governments are busy petitioning the government to make this a reality, and it looks like everyone is pretty much on board. This would make absolute sure that inmates would not be able to communicate with outsiders. There’s no word when the President will sign the move into a law.
