Lowell McAdam of Verizon has reportedly said there are just too many operating systems for Mobile Phones. Choice is one thing, although is too many just too much?

There is RIM with BlackBerry, Apple with the iPhone OS, Android, Symbian, Windows Mobile and more. Of the nine or so operating systems Verizon currently uses on mobile devices, McAdam believes they really only need three or four. This manner of thinking could be a problem mainly for the smaller players. Apple, RIM, Microsoft and Google will hardly just step down from the race.
Over the next few years, the longevity of operating systems will become clear. This from multiple factors including the up-take from carriers, customer loyalty, support, ongoing development and suitability of needs at the time. Many people probably do not even now what operating system their phone uses, or even care. It might be a case of eggs being spread between too many baskets (from the point of time served / developers / technology etc). If the number of operating systems went down, development could focus on and expand with those remaining, thus increasing quality and option. Time will certainly tell how the operating systems will fair in very competitive times.
