Vodafone, one of the world’s largest mobile carriers, has announced they are working with Western Union to provide international mobile money transfers to their users. The two companies will launch a cross-border Mobile Money Transfer (MMT) between the UK and Kenya.

With the help from Safaricom, a leading Kenyan operator (40% owned by the UK-based company), Vodafone and Western Union will allow users to send money in a matter of minutes from their mobile device. This service will be based on M-PESA, which is a mobile money transfer service that is already very popular in Kenya. The service will be available to citizens visiting select Western Union agents from Reading, Berkshire. If this turns out to be a success, Vodafone will launch this service in many other countries.
