Coming in resolutely at the budget end of the spectrum, Motorola’s W181 (and W161, details after the cut) certainly won’t win any awards for functionality and nor will they put up to much of a challenge when it comes to style. An ultra-basic handset ideal for developing markets, the W181 has a 128 x 128 CSTN display, FM radio and will be available in two dualband versions (GSM 900/1800 and 850/1900); it has SMS messaging (though no MMS support), a speakerphone and 70KB (no, you didn’t read that wrong) internal memory. Charging is via a USB1.1 port, and the 80g handset should last for 590 minutes of talktime or 465 hours of standby.

Meanwhile, the Motorola W161 manages the dubious success of making the W181 look luxurious. With a 128 x 128 monochrome display and mere 20KB of internal memory, the W161 can only hold 200 contacts and 60 SMS messages (compared to the 500 contacts and 750 SMS of the W181) but otherwise has the same specifications as its sibling.
Expect both the W161 and W181 to be available in Q1 2008.
