YouTube have announced a generic mobile video portal that should, they promise, bring the bulk of the site’s content to just about any 3G cellphone. Accessible at m.youtube.com, it has functionality that previously you would have needed a special cellphone – such as one from Helio’s stable – to get, such as channel subscription, adding favourites, and uploading your own video content to the site.

In an attempt to promote use, the mobile site is free of advertising and so the only bill users will have to pay is the data fees to their operator. It could prove to be expensive, however, as YouTube themselves warn that the service is “data intensive” and best enjoyed by those with unlimited data packages.
